Simon’s story to beat type 2 diabetes
After finding out from his GP that he was at risk of type 2 diabetes, Simon, 54, enrolled onto the Healthier You: NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme run by Xyla in North London. Since joining the programme, Simon has lost over 40 kilos, which is an incredible achievement and shares his story with us.
Q. What prompted you to undertake the Healthier You: National Diabetes Prevention Programme?
A. After being told by my GP that I was at high risk of type 2 diabetes and close to being diabetic, it was up to me to get my levels within the normal range. I was certain I didn’t want to take tablets or any injections in relation to diabetes, so I knew I needed to do something about it.
Q. What changes did you make initially and have subsequently continued with?
A. Due to health reasons, I used to consume large amounts of Manuka honey, so my first step was to reduce this significantly as the sugar content was massively increasing my glucose levels. I’ve got into the habit of walking many miles a day to increase my physical activity and I’ve also reduced the amount of carbohydrates I consume.
Q. How did you find the coaches at the sessions?
A. The coaches were very good throughout the programme. They always took the time to answer all of our questions.
Q. Do you have any advice for those starting on the programme?
Once you get into the swing of the changes needed, it isn’t bad. This first week may be hard to make changes, but as time goes on, it gets easier. I imagine the same applies with people stopping smoking… hard at first, then easier over months and years.
