International Day of Disabled Persons

Launched in 1992, the International Day of Disabled Persons is now in its 29th year, symbolising nearly three decades of progress for the disabled community. The primary goal is to foster an awareness of disability-related issues and generate support for upholding the dignity, rights, and wellbeing of individuals with disabilities.

In 2023, Acacium Group became a Disability Confident Committed employer (Level 1). As we look ahead to 2024, we will continue working towards achieving a Disability Confident Employer (Level 2). Much of the progress we have made can be attributed to dedication of our employee-led networks.

Acacium Group’s employee-led networks are at the heart of driving meaningful change on our diversity and inclusion journey. Our accessibility network, UNIQUE, represents that we are all unique in how we feel, think, act and behave. Whether we are neurotypical or a neuro minority, our degree of physical enablement or otherwise, this network aims to reflect, advocate and breed awareness of our unique strengths and capabilities.

In the workplace, numerous challenges can impede disabled employees from realising their full potential. Whether it’s the provision of wheelchair ramps, utilisation of screen readers, implementation of braille signage, or ensuring accessible toilets, it is crucial to accommodate employees of diverse abilities.

From physical places to digital spaces, we want to afford everyone equal access to Acacium Group. UNIQUE played a central role in designing our London headquarters to positively enable disability inclusion. This includes accessible design, such as wide aisles and clear routes, as well as neurodiverse workspaces created to be conscious of the effects of space, lighting and sound.

Accessibility also includes how we design signage, marketing collateral and e-learning materials. Our Graphic Design and User Experience team underwent accessibility training to know how colours, fonts and formatting can impact people with visual and cognitive impairments. We ensure that all digital texts are correctly labelled for use with adaptive technologies such as e-readers and intranet content.
